Flooring Trends for 2016

The New Year often brings with it new projects, exciting changes and wonderful plans. A fun time if you’re planning to renovate or build a property. Below we have a look at some of the flooring trends making their mark around the globe for 2016, that you could use in your new home.

1. Large Format Tiles – 12×24 inch and even 36×36 inch tiles have become incredibly popular over the last year or so and are set to be a common choice in the year ahead. Larger tiles also mean less grout lines to clean however the floor substrate has to be perfectly level in order for large format tiles to sit correctly.

2. Bamboo Flooring – Bamboo has been around for centuries but what seems to be on the rise is the use of different colours, styles and textures. In some instances bamboo is in fact harder than hardwood when dried and newer products such as strand-woven bamboo, a highly engineering product is twice as hard as traditional bamboo.

3. Cork Flooring – Cork is a very popular choice for rooms that need good acoustic quality. Due to current day technology cork floors are available in just about any colours. Cork is very comfortable to walk on and is very durable.

4. Luxury Vinyl Tiles – In our article Types of Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) we had an in depth look at the advantages around installing luxury vinyl tiles. LVT combines the high end look of hardwood flooring with the durability and affordability of vinyl. Gone are the days of peel-and-stick, ill-fitting, plastic smelling vinyl. Have a read through our article The 5 advantages of Vinyl Flooring for some more useful advice when trying to choose the best flooring option.

5. Concrete Flooring– Concrete is great for old buildings where the concrete floors already exist, so minimal preparation for the finished product needs to be done. Think New York studio apartment; it is cheap and looks very modern. Concrete is also available in just about any colour and texture. It is however very hard and cold and can become quite unpleasant to walk on after a long day. Concrete is however still high in the ranks for a top flooring choice in 2016.

6. Reclaimed Wood Flooring – The trend of old-antique looking wood floors is beautiful but can also be very expensive. Now adays this look is manufactured and wooden floors can be bought with that timeless hand-hewn look. A firm favourite flooring choice in 2016.
